With the rain staying at bay the running conditions were pleasant with the north westerly picking up slightly and the sun coming out. For the final round of XCR 2016 our numbers bounced back with 59 athletes competing in 15 junior, senior and overage teams. Our best results of the day were the first for the U14 girls, third for the U20 men and third for the 40+ women. Thanks again to our many juniors running up in the open teams, our AV helpers Julie and Russell White and Sam Mahoney. Thanks to all those who recorded for our teams and Brenda Cashin and Lori Glover for collecting the subs.
Rochelle Kennedy kicked off our premier women and produced our fastest women’s run of the day in a time of the day, 13 minutes and 26 seconds. Coming in second for the women was junior U16 Ebony Dodemaide and in her debut for the premier women’s team then Claire Hodgart, Aimee Lane and finishing off the team in 7th place was Vic Team Marathon representative Nardine Bainbridge. The women’s Div 3 with three juniors athletes: U20 Bianca Rebesco, U16 Emma Stankic and U16 Rachel Evans finished 9th, the Div 4, with U18 Justine Muscat finished 7th and the Div 5, with U16 Caitlin Hendricksen finished 8th.
In the ladders our Premier women’s finished the season in 6th place, a very commendable first season’s effort in the division. Our Div 3 were 4th, Div 4, 2nd and Div 5 3rd.
Overall a really solid season’s effort from the ladies, well done. The prize for our women’s of course is our first 40+ premiership. Going into the final round the premiership was not a sure thing, the ladies had to work for the victory and in the end they did in style with a third place podium and two points ahead of their rivals Mentone.
The Div 2 team of Michael Mirindi, Alistair McDonald, Chris Downie, Indi cooper, Junior U20 Matthew Schaumberg and Alex Tyrrell all ran solidly to finish 6th in a very strong field. Our Div 3 team, with junior U20 Sean Cross and U16 Bailey Rankin finished 5th, the Div 6, with U14 Thomas Glover and U16 Sam Clifford finished 8th and the Div 7 team with U14 Ben Hussey and U18 Toby Evans was 5th and the mighty ‘B’ team was 15th.
In the ladders our Div 2, despite a late season slump, managed to hold out Richmond and a fast finishing Box Hill team to hold onto second place. Our Div 3 did enough to maintain its 10th place and well away from relegation to Div 4. The Div 6 finished the season in 5th and our Div 7s finished 5th and 12th.
The best result of the day was our U14 girls team of Mia White, Georgia Muller and Yara Taylor cruising to their 9th win of the season. Our Men’s U20 finished 3rd, the Women’s U16 were 6th, U16 men were 5th and the U18 men were 7th. Congratulations to Cody Shanahan who ran the fastest time of the day for Western Aths in a time of 11 minutes and 43 seconds.
In the XCR 2016 team ladders we had three premierships, two of which were late season surprises in the U20 men and U16 women while the U14 girls team was always a strong prospect and they did not disappoint. The U14s were not just premiers but achieved a rare clean sweep winning all 9 XCR rounds. Our U16 and U18 also put in a solid effort through the season finishing in 3rd place and our U14 were 9th.
