AVSL Round 1 Wrap 2024-25
What an opening day to our summer T&F season. It was stereotypical Melbourne weather, which, in reality, doesn’t occur that often. We had a mixed bag of wind, deluge, calmness, pleasant warmth and spitting rain. There were some stoic performances, especially by the ladies 800m and the Club Helpers.
We ended the round in 5th place with a score of 26 335 points.
The Premier Division ladder is EAG , ESS , DIV , GHY , WES, SBE, WEN , MEN , BOH and CHI.
It was terrific to see 10 athletes compete in their first round of AVSL for Western Athletics. A very warm welcome, (not weather wise unfortunately), to Blake Barber, Pbratzen Barbie, Lisa Gunn, Leo Heading, Callan Jordan, Ella McDonald, Matthew Pershin, Abby Speakman, Nick Tavendale and Ethan Young.
In all we had 48 scoring athletes and they completed a total of 88 scoring events.
This round we had 12 athletes do three or more scoring events, 15 athletes completed two scoring events and 22 completed one scoring event.
Thank-you to the following athletes who completed three individual scoring events: Lexie B, Claire H, Amy G, Cheryl N, Tracy C, Janice H, Brenda C, Jacob B-M, Matthew P, Ethan Y, John P and Alan B.
Thanks to Pbratzen B, Marissa A, Nardine B, Ruth O, Lucy C, Holly G, Charli B, Ella Mc, Maddi H, Isabelle B-M, Matthew M, Callan J, Wayne B, Mal H and Stan P for completing two individual scoring events.
It was nice to see some new names amongst our top ten points scorers: Alan Baldry 925, Matthew Pershin 881, Amy Gardiner 841, Ethan Young 827, Janice Hodgart 806, John Papworth 804, Lucy Cleveland 795, Lexie Barlow 765, Wayne Bingham 706 and Tracy Colbert 700.
Club Helpers
Always be aware that without Club helpers our sport would not happen. This is why we need you to contribute and do your part.
The lap scoring for the 3km and 5km turned into very big task, especially with 9 Western Athletics athletes in the first heat of the Men’s 3km, 6 in the first heat of the Women’s 3km and another 9 in the 5km. A huge thank-you to Cath Cleveland who stepped in and helped me with the 3km M & W and 5km. A big thank-you to Tracy Colbert who helped with the 3kms and Cheryl Nelson who helped with the 5km. We had 29 athletes in the 3km and 5km and without your support lap times would not have been possible.
A big thanks to Paul Wright who did two of our AV timeslots during the 3kms and 5km. Both Paul and Leo Heading (800m) spent time out there in the rain during their AV Track Club duties. Thank-you also to Mal Hodgart (track) and Julie Morgan (for continually checking in at track to see if she was needed). Thanks to our Club helpers at Triple Jump: Bridget Sneyders, Graham Shaw, Crystal Brown, Ben Mudie, Rebecca Bassos, Leanne Young, Jenny Arnold, Amanda Jordan, Brenda Cashin and Lexie Barlow. Hats off to Leanne, Amanda and Leo for stepping up in their first round of AVSL.
We still have 4 timeslots to fill for round 3 at Keilor at long jump, 2 at 4pm and 2 at 5pm.
