AVSL 2021 Round 9 Wrap

AVSL was at Aberfeldie, and conditions were pleasantly hot, (I spent significant time in the shade) with a slight wind. We finished the day in 2nd place on 28 500 points, behind KSB on 29 466. KSB, WT&F and Eureka played their Powerplays with KSB getting 20 pts, WT&F 16 points and Eureka 14 pts.

 On provisional results, we are on top of the Division 2 Ladder with 89 points, from Bendigo Harriers 76 pts, KSB on 73 pts, Wyndham T&F on 64 pts, South Bendigo on 64 pts, Sandringham on 56 pts, Ballarat Harriers 52 pts, Mornington 49 pts, Eureka 38 pts and Ringwood on 10 pts. Western Athletics, Bendigo Harriers and KSB have secured their places in the playoffs, Round 10 will settle the battle for 4th place between WT&F and Sth Bendigo and the decide the 4th team to contest the playoffs.

We have finished in 2nd place 4 times out of the last five rounds and in the other round we finished 4th. We will need all our eligible athletes competing in multiple events at the playoffs if we are to win the Division title. Our Powerplay round showed we are capable of this, so please keep this in mind and talk to your coach.

We had 52 athletes line up for the day, with 14 athletes competing in 3 events and 9 athletes in 2 individual scoring events and 29 competing in 1 event. Thanks to Brenda, Ruth, Janice, Alan, Ben H, Kaelan, Liz, Emily, Sarah, Blair, Stan, Summer, Ruby and Jeeva for competing in 3 or more events and, Amber, Nadia, Emerson, Nicole, Xander, Matthew, Jackson, Graham and Oscar for competing in 2 individual scoring events.

Congratulations to our U16 men and U16 women who came 2nd and 3rd respectively in the State Age Group Scores. Other top ten places were: Open Men 7th, Open Women 10th and Men U18 10th.

We had some outstanding performances with two sub 11 sec 100m and three Club Records broken. Jade Chitty set a new Club record for the U18 5km walk in the time of 29:27.0h, Frankleen Newah-Jafoi set a new record for the U18 and U20 100m (non-wind assisted) in the time of 10.91 (0.8) and Brayden Portelli ran sub-11, unfortunately pulling up tight in the last 15m. Lastly, Liam Cashin set a new record for the Open Men’s steeplechase, running 8:55.6h despite having a spectacular fall at the 3rd last water jump.

For those looking to qualify for a Playoff event, the long hurdles, 3000m and triple jump are on at Lakeside, there is 3000m, shot put and triple jump in Ballarat, walk, shot put & triple jump at Bendigo and 3000m, shot put and triple jump at Geelong.
