We were so lucky with the weather on Sunday, given what Melbourne put up during the week. The conditions were ideal for racing, starting with cool still and sunny conditions and as the race progressed a gentle northerly developed and light cloud cover to filter the sun’s rays. There were many athletes who took advantage of these conditions, posting some solid times and PBs. Thanks to our three AV helpers on the day; Liam Cashin, Lori Glover and Caitlin Sneyders. The overall numbers for round 9 were down however we managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over fielding 4 open teams and 5 junior teams.
We managed 2 teams in the open men and importantly collected valuable points for the Div 3 team to keep them safe from relegation. We took a bit of a hit in this round with the Div 2 with many athletes out of the mix. However, with a sizeable lead going into the penultimate round, we are still 13 points ahead of Box Hill and still on track for the premiership. First in for the Div 2 was Michael Mirindi with a 90 second PB in a time of 70 minutes and 6 seconds in 15th place overall. Alistair McDonald came in second then Daniel Dunstone (in his first half marathon), Alan Hammond then Peter Cashin. Worthy of note was Alan Hammond’s and Peter Cashin’s performance to not only make our Div 2 team for the first time this year but taking out first and second place of the 60+ category in this race. Congratulations to Genn Evans in his first half marathon and a very well paced race.
It was another solid effort our Open women’s Premier team with Brianna Bunworth cruising the line in a time of 83 minutes and 23 seconds. Stephanie Thomas came in second and broke 90 minutes, Brigitte Sneyders and Sharon Rankin - all three running PBs with Sharon surpirsing herself and slicing 3 minutes from previous best time! Great distance running from all with the team finishing 6th. Our Div 3 team was 4th. The 40+ team was 3rd with Stephanie Thomas coming first in the 40 to 44 age group. There were lots of other top ten results in the overage catergories with Sharon Rankin 8th in the 45-49 age group, Mechelle Lane 5th in the 55-59 age group and Janice Hodgart with a PB and 7th in the 50 to 54 age group.
We had two wins in the juniors’ 5km race, Cody Shanahan in the U20, who also completed a clean sweep of the XCR 17 U20 season and Ebony Dodemaide in the women’s U16. There were many other top ten results:
- Women U16 - Georgia Muller 10th
- Men U16 - Ethan McMinimee – 4th, Brandon Muscat – 6th, Tom Gover – 10th
- Women U18 – Sophie McMinimee 3rd, Emma Stankic 9th
- Men U18 – Matthew Hussey 10th
- Men U20 – Kaman Malou 9th
In the teams’ results our Men’s U20 were first, extending their lead in the premiership, the Men U18 were third and, with Ballarat Region fielding a strong team, will stay second on the ladder. In the women’s U16 we had another win and now have the premiership. In the women’s U18 we had the only team and now have a 12 point lead in the ladder so now in the box seat for the premiership with just the Princes Park relay remaining.
